Train like an athlete

Whatever business you are going into, it pays to train. Whether this is by attending business classes or brushing up on your technical knowledge of an area. The more you practice and learn the easier you will find running a business. Here are some tips;

Business books - If you’re running any type of business it pays to have 1 or 2 good books on running a business, one to tell you about the accounting side, and another general handbook.

Trade magazines - Readily available at your local library or by subscription, keep up-to-date with your business area by regularly reading them.

Internet - The biggest source of information, you can read articles, see videos on sites like YouTube, participate in forums, and sign up to on-line courses.

Audio books - Don't have hours to dedicate to reading? An audio book can be a great way to read a book on a particular topic. Available as downloads or on CD’s you can listen to them on your journey to work, whilst you wash the dishes or anytime.

Classes - There is often a wide range of classes available at your local adult learning centre, universities or privately, and normally at a time and pace to suit you. If you are particular weak in a area of business it can be a good way to get up to speed. As well as learning you’ll meet a lot of other people to network with.

Mentors - A good mentor is hard to find, but if you can find one that can help you and your business take that opportunity.

Measuring - Just like how an athlete has a stop watch to measure their performance, you need to create a way of measuring your performance. Whether this is sales, profit, visitors to your website or efficiency, knowing how well you are doing is a critical part of the equation that tells you how successful your business is.

Just in the same way that top athlete train to become the best in their field, so do you. By learning, researching and practicing you’ll be able to improve your business.
