James Bowthorpe, world record holder, rides again

On 5 September 2010 world record holder James Bowthorpe from Balham, South London, will be back in the saddle, leading a team of 25 talented amateur cyclists from John O’Groats to Lands End in just eight days.  The team will cover a gruelling 120 miles a day to raise funds for ‘What’s Driving Parkinson’s’.

In 2009 Bowthorpe circumnavigated the world on a bicycle in just 174 days and five hours, smashing the existing world record by an incredible 20 days.

JOGLE 2010, Bowthorpe’s latest challenge, celebrates the impending publication of the new Guinness Book of Records which includes his hard won title.  It is also another step towards his ambition to raise £1.8 million to fund a further five years of research into the cause of Parkinson’s Disease (PD).

Bowthorpe began his fundraising efforts after joining the ‘What’s Driving Parkinson’s’ research team, at King’s College hospital in South London in 2007.

My granddad had Parkinson’s when I was growing up and I only knew him as a slow old man with sticks.  When I needed clinical experience to apply for medical school I looked for work to do with Parkinson’s so I could explain to my younger self what was up with granddad,” Bowthorpe explains.  “At ‘What’s Driving Parkinson’s’ I’ve seen people who have been told elsewhere that their symptoms will get steadily worse come into the clinic and improve to the point you wouldn’t even know they had the disease.

The itinerary of the trip is as follows:

· Day One: John O’Groats to Inverness

· Day Two: Inverness to Perth

· Day Three: Perth to Otterburn

· Day Four: Otterburn to Keighly

· Day Five: Keighly to Coleshill

· Day Six: Coleshill to Radstock

· Day Seven: Radstock to Liskeard

· Day Eight: Liskeard to Lands End
