You may have paid for 8mb broadband but is that what you are getting? Many people who pay for broadband do not actually receive the speed that is shown on their broadband suppliers adverts. The reality is not everyone is capable of receiving the top speed that broadband suppliers quote. They get around this by making statements such as “upto 8mb” or using the asterisk like this “ 24mb broadband* ” then somewhere on the page in small lettering stating this is not what you may get.
So why the difference?
The speed of the broadband the you can receive depends on several factors such as;
The distance between your location and the telephone exchange
How up-to-date the telephone exchange and equipment is
The number of people on the exchange
The broadband supplier putting you on the right package
So what should you do?
Simple test your connection, there are many websites on the Internet that can test this for you. We prefer to use speedtest.net. Using the site is simple, when the page appears simply click on the recommended server, and the test begins.

If your not getting what you signed up for then its time to have a word with your broadband supplier. Most suppliers will generally reduce your monthly cost so you only pay for the service you are getting. If they have put you on the wrong package they should correct it and compensate you for the error.
If on the other hand you are looking to change supplier they will be able to test the speed for you before you sign up, this will be done for free.
One final note
Technology forever changes so whilst it may not be possible for you to get the maximum speed today it may be possible in the future, this could be anywhere between a day or a couple of years. So if you do want more speed it may be worth checking with your supplier to see what speed is actually available.
