QVC’s Sports Days, run by local charity, Battersea Summer Scheme, will once again
keep young local residents active during the long summer holidays with a range of
creative, challenging and sporting activities. Open to those between the ages of
8 and 16 it will cost just £1 each day to take part.
Participants will have the chance to experience a whole range of sporting and artistic activities including judo, tennis, football, dance and even the trapeze. For those with a head for heights, there will be a climbing wall and high rope course, plus the Animal People will be there on Tuesday and Friday with some furry (and not so furry) friends. Chelsea Football Club will also be attending to offer their expert coaching skills to Battersea’s sports stars of the future, plus for the first time, the Metropolitan Police will be organising cricket training.
On Thursday 5th August, local residents will also have the opportunity to take part in Street Athletics, run by Linford Christie and Darren Campbell. The event will consist of a series of 60m races and will result in a final race for each age group. The winners will qualify for the National Final in Manchester in September. Registration will be from 1pm to 2pm with races between 2pm and 4pm. It’s absolutely free to take part and no special running kit is required. For the latest information go to www.streetatheltics.co.uk and join the Street Athletics Facebook Page.
Other local services at the event will include the Fire Brigade, Wandsworth Park’s Police Dogs, British Transport Police, Battersea Dogs & Cats Home, London Ambulance and the libraries. They all donate their time and resources, offering help and advice along with inspiring and entertaining activities.
Simone Jousse, Corporate Communications Manager at QVC, said: “We are delighted to once again be supporting Battersea Summer Scheme’s week of sport in the park. The programme makes a real difference to youngsters in Battersea who don’t always have the same opportunities as those living elsewhere and can find themselves at a loose end during the summer break. QVC’s Sports Days not only give them the chance to try new activities and enjoy themselves, it could also help identify some star athletes of the future.”
QVC employees have made the event possible by undertaking charity fundraising activities to sponsor the week-long event. Additional support is provided by Battersea Crime Prevention Panel, Chelsea Football Club, The Metropolitan Police, Peter Jones (John Lewis) and WBC Sports Development.
